While Hasbro has played all their Captain Marvel movie cards already, we’re still waiting to see exactly what kind of love Carol will be getting from some other prominent companies. Diamond Select Toys finally announced the first of their Captain Marvel collectibles this week (almost certainly with more to come), including a figure that most DST fans’ eyes will be fixed upon: the Marvel Select Captain Marvel figure is now up for order—and hey, there’s a Minimates box set too! But wait, is that… a price increase I see…?
Another MCU movie, another blacked-out silhouette solicitation that we’re going to have to wait until more information is released about! Even so, there’s a couple things I noticed on this solicitation information that I think are definitely worthy of being pointed out:
First, the price is a big surprise. Marvel Select 7” figures—even humongous ones such as Juggernaut and Gladiator Hulk—have always been priced around the $25 mark. But it looks like the times (and costs) are a-changin’ in 2019, as the Marvel Select Captain Marvel figure is priced at a cool $29.99 MSRP!
Given that Marvel Legends figures have more than doubled in retail price, whereas DST Select figure prices have remained stable for many years, it’s hard to get mad over what’s likely a long-overdue price increase. Even so, that extra 5 bucks tacked onto the MSRP still stings.
Even discounted on Entertainment Earth for pre-orders, the DST Captain Marvel figure is $27.99, several dollars more than the old MSRP. Hopefully this won’t dissuade too many folks and ultimately hurt sales.
The other things that we can tell from the solicit for this Captain Marvel Select figure are, well… not much! The text mentions that this figure will be in the green Starforce costume, which is a bit of a surprise, but I’d bet dollars to doughnuts we’ll be getting a red costume exclusive for the Disney Store if that turns out to be true.
There’s no mention of accessories whatsoever, and all we can see of the seven inch figure itself is a silhouette. Hopefully we’ll see Carol revealed in full at New York Toy Fair 2019 in February, where I’ll be on the floor as always and eager to post the best hi-res photos that I can.
Along with the highly-anticipated Select figure, there’s also a Captain Marvel Minimates 4-Pack of figures containing Carol (in bomber jacket), Att-Lass, Minn-Erva and Nuro the Skrull. There’s thankfully no price increase here—the pack comes at the typical $24.99 MSRP for these types of sets.
As there’s no standard Captain Marvel in this box set—or even a young Nick Fury or Agent Coulson or Starforce Commander—I think we can reasonably assume more Minimates packs for the movie will be forthcoming. I’d anticipate that we’ll hear about those at Toy Fair 2019 as well, if not sooner.
The Diamond Select Captain Marvel Minimates and Marvel Select Figure are now up for order, and are scheduled to be released in Spring 2019. Marvel Minimates box sets rarely (if ever) sell out prior to being released these days, but if the movie turns out to be a hit, there’s a real possibility that the Carol Danvers Select might sell out prior to release.
Now that you’ve seen the silhouette and read the few details available, where do you stand on the Marvel Select Captain Marvel figure? Are you willing to blind buy Carol based off her silhouette, or are you waiting for an actual image of the toy? And in general, if the MSRP of the Select line goes up to $29.99 (as seems to be the case), how will that affect your view of and collecting of it?
